7 Benefits of a Daily Affirmation Plan

Affirmations are not only for manifesting a specific goal. They’re meant to encourage a life filled with positivity and gratitude. While they do help you achieve certain goals, there’s more to them than that. Let’s say you manifested the job you wanted. Now what? Do you drop the “I am the boss” affirmation? Yes, you do drop that one but you should replace it with a new affirmation. Something like, “I like my job,” or “I enjoy learning new things every day.” The affirmation plan is a never-ending life practice.

The Benefits of Daily Affirmation

  1. You become aware of your daily thoughts and words, reducing the risk of letting negativity seep in.
  2. You notice more synchronicities in your life, which serves to encourage and motivate you to keep up the practice.
  3. Daily affirmations not only help keep you surrounded by the things you want in your life but they help bring about more blessings and gifts.
  4. A daily practice helps to keep the small things in perspective. In this high-speed world you can easily lose sight of how large the small things really are. When healthy you may forget to think of how much you appreciate it. A simple morning affirmation sentence of “I am healthy” can go a long way.
  5. A recent study shows that optimistic people have healthier hearts, and affirmations help you to stay positive.
  6. As you continue this practice, others take note and you begin to help those around you without even trying. This, in turn, helps keep you focused.
  7. Daily affirmations keep you in a constant state of gratitude.

Affirmations of Gratitude

Gratitude helps you stay positive and should be practiced daily. The problem is that gratitude for certain things can morph over time. For example, you got that great job after scoping it out for months, interviewing five times, and purchasing a new wardrobe to fit the title. At first you were ecstatic, jumping up and down and calling everyone you know to tell them what you manifested. Fast forward two years. The hours are long, you haven’t received a raise, and your boss blames you for things that have nothing to do with you. By now your level of gratitude for this job is different. Perhaps you’re even trying to manifest a new job and have dropped your affirmations of gratitude for this one.
Try this approach instead: Continue with your affirmations of being very thankful for your position and what it provides. The negatives are still there but using the affirmations to help you focus on the positive aspects will give more power to the other set of affirmations in your practice. Affirmations for what you are or who you are aspiring to become are important but should not hold more weight than the affirmations of gratitude for what you’ve already manifested.

ACCELERATE YOUR BUSINESS: 4 Cybersecurity Best Practices for Your Organization

**As originally posted on Entrepreneur.com**

A data breach can happen to any organization, and it’s a growing concern among companies both large and small. According to this cyberattack infographic, an IBM study revealed that the average consolidated cost of a data breach is approximately $3.8 million, a 23 percent increase from 2013. According to that same graphic, the Identity Theft Resource Center found that approximately 22 percent of breaches are due to insider theft, and 12 percent are simply a matter of accidental exposure.
You can keep your company and your employees safe from these dangerous data breaches by ensuring that employees are aware of a few tried-and-true data security best practices. Here are some of the most important ones:

1. Practice good access control.

Without good access control protocols, company information remains at risk. Each organization should have a firm policy on password strength and password update policies. Convey the importance of keeping those passwords private, and make sure your employees adhere to minimum password requirements.
Employees should also lock their computers when they are away from their desks. If you have employees accessing your network remotely, make sure that you know exactly when they are doing so, and why.

2. Avoid scams.

A good email filter may be the first defense against phishing scams, but it should not be the last. Educate employees on what phishy emails look like, and make sure they know which ones to avoid opening. Remind employees to never open attachments from unknown senders and to never provide sensitive business data to unfamiliar individuals outside the company. Spell out what information is and is not acceptable to divulge over the phone, in an email, or in-person to those of unfamiliar status within the organization and outside the company.

3. Implement hardware and software restrictions.

It’s important to place limitations on the types of installations and downloads that employees are allowed to perform on company computers. Employees should not be allowed to install or download any software on company technology that is not previously reviewed and authorized. Explain to your employees the importance of avoiding freeware and shareware and how this type of software can become a threat. What may appear to be an innocuous download for work purposes can easily introduce a virus to your network and expose sensitive business data.

4. Manage mobile devices.

Mobile devices pose additional risks, as data can be easily exposed outside of the office. Off-site devices can be subject to mobile malware, eavesdropping, unauthorized access, theft and loss. Set expectations with employees as to their mobile conduct when accessing company data while on the road. If you allow employees to connect personal mobile devices to company Wi-Fi connections, make sure those connections are separate from the general organization network.
Almost half of American companies experienced some sort of data breach of in 2013. It doesn’t take an expert hacker to view, take possession of, or exploit personal, intellectual or financial data. In fact, according to a Forrester Research report, most mobile data breaches are caused by employee negligence.
Security training can be a challenge without explaining the importance of security measures and adequately communicating how these measures effect the company and the employee. By implementing a few best practices and making sure that data security is of principal concern to everyone within your organization, you can keep your employees educated and your sensitive company data safe from prying eyes.

Power of Consistency

So this article might offend some of you. It might make some angry. But I have to say it. The reason why there aren’t more millionaires, more great businesses, happy marriages, more wellbehaved kids, and more people in shape all boils down to one thing.

Consistency.

If you’re not consistently working to improve yourself, consistently working to grow your business or get better at what you do or consistently eating healthy and exercising, you’re moving backwards. Let's be honest, these days most people have the attention span of a flee.

To achieve anything great requires a commitment to consistency in order to see that vision of greatness come to life.

I can’t tell you the number of times I speak to people who want to lose weight and get in shape. And guess what their number one challenge is?

Sticking to a regimen.

Or in other words consistency.

To be consistent, you have to take the long view. You have to see the forest for the trees. You have to be able to get over the little hurdles and setbacks and know that you are on a journey that most likely won’t happen overnight. Greatness is a process.

Weight loss is a process.

Learning to eat healthy is a process.

Putting your needs first is. a. process.

Communicating well with your partner is a process.

And all of these things can lead to an incredible outcome whether it be making more money, being in a great relationship or wearing a two piece at the beach, but they are require consistency in action and effort.

And the truth of the matter is, when you really REALLY want something, you’ll do whatever it takes to get it. (iPhone 6s anyone?)

So if you’re having a hard time being consistent with anything in your life, question your motivation. How badly do you want it?

Because the truth is most people think they want to lose weight more than anything. I ask them if they are sure they really want it. And they implore me that YES! They really really want to lose weight.

And sometimes I tell them, that’s not the truth. The truth is that they REALLY want something more. They want the cookies more. The fried foods more. The gummy bears more.

Because when you really want something, you will move through hell or high water to get it. You will scrimp and save. You will do what it takes and will do it consistently until you get it.

So what do you really want?

3 Reasons Why We Don't Prosper Financially

Pop Quiz!!! I’m sure most of us have vivid memories of an elementary school teacher making this announcement. I used to cringe. Have no fear! This quiz will be quick and painless. Please answer the following questions…

1.       Who is the wealthiest African American female?

2.       What basketball legend became a billionaire last year?

3.       Which hip hop artist was reported to have made $3 billion from the sale of their product line to Apple?

4.       What does the acronym FIN stand for and do you know your FIN?

5.       What is your FICO score?

6.       When will you be debt free?

I’m sure you answered Oprah, Michael Jordan and Dr. Dre respectively to the first three questions. But what were your answers to the last three questions? Did you have an answer? I usually try this little experiment as an ice breaker at my seminars and workshops and no matter what 3-4 questions I ask about pop culture, the participants are engaged and shouting out the answers. Then, as you’ve probably figured out, aren’t as quick to answer the questions that pertain to their personal finances because they don’t know. My job as a Money Coach isn’t to make anybody feel bad. It’s to help us become aware of this mindset and realize that it’s more important to understand and have an active role in their own lives. In other words…know what’s going on with YOUR money! This is particularly important for women.

You see, there are three reasons why people do not prosper financially:
1.       Lack of financial literacy. Fewer than 2 in 10 women feel “very prepared” to make wise financial decisions. Half indicate that they “need some help”, and one-third feels that they “need a lot of help”. (Financial Experience & Behaviors Among Women 2010-2011 Prudential Research Study) Not to mention, in 80% of the nation’s households women are the primary decision makers regarding purchases. (People Support, as cited on www.womanmotorist.com) However, women are least likely to have a financial planner or money coach.

2.       Lack of a written financial game plan. The average life expectancy for women is 81 years, compared to 73 years for men. (The Social Security Administration) The fact that women are less likely to sit down with a professional to map out their financial future is very dangerous because even though women have longer life expectancies, when asked how much they were aiming for in retirement savings, women aimed lower, with a median goal of $200,000 versus $400,000 for men. (Retirement Fitness Survey 2010) So it’s even more important for women to make sure they are on track for retirement. Most people I sit down with are more concerned with running out of money in retirement than dying too soon. It’s still important though to address both concerns.

3.       Lack of accountability. Life is full of ups and downs...peaks and valleys. Statistics show nearly two-thirds of U.S. women ages 40 to 79 have already dealt with a major financial “life crisis”, such as a job loss, divorce, death of a spouse or serious illness. (AARP, “Understanding Women’s Financial Needs and Behavior” 2007 survey) So having a money coach who has a vested interest in your financial success is essential to helping you navigate the twists and turns that life can bring about.

As you can see, women have a very specific set of needs when it comes to creating a financial strategy. If you have financial concerns, need to ask questions or would like assistance in taking inspired action to create the life you desire, please send me an email. I pray this information was helpful. Brightest blessings!

4 STEPS TO CREATING THE ULTIMATE VISION FOR YOUR LIFE

**As originally posted on tonyrobbins.com**

The one trait that all successful, fulfilled people cultivate—be they great writers, teachers, artists, parents, politicians or athletes—is a passion and enthusiasm for life. We all need a compelling vision for our lives: one so powerful that we are driven to do whatever it takes to achieve it.

When we pursue something greater than the current moment, we find fulfillment and joy. The ultimate vision flows from knowing we have a special and unique purpose on this planet. So, how do you create this ultimate vision? Go to an environment that inspires you and where you won’t be interrupted (e.g. the beach, a park, an art museum), and take these steps:

Step 1: Write a paragraph or two answering following questions: What do you want to create for your life? If all of a sudden you had the energy again like you were a little kid and the journey had just begun, what would you be excited to tackle? What would get you up early and keep you up late at night? What would your life be about? What does that vision look like? If you had no fear about moving forward, what would you do in your life? What challenges might you be excited to overcome? What do you want to contribute to your own life and the lives of others? What do you want to give, create, be, feel or share?

Step 2: Make sure this vision is emotionally charged, with the power to move you to action: Your vision will provide a consistent focus, continually reminding you what it is you are committed to creating in your life, career or business.

Step 3: Add specifics: Your vision should provide some detail about what measurable results you are going to achieve in your life. This yardstick will help you assess where you are versus where you want to be.

Step 4: Don’t try to make your description perfect You aren’t writing for the Pulitzer Prize—you’re writing to create something that excites you! Try drawing or cutting out pictures that inspire you or that describe your vision. Or choose a song that becomes your theme song for your life. Get creative, as there is no right or wrong way to describe your ultimate vision.

35 Tips to Make This Your Best Year Yet

*As originally posted on www.robinsharma.com*

35 Fast Tips to Make This Your Best Year Yet

Best Year Yet
I’m sitting on an airplane thinking about what the best performers and most successful people do to continually outperform everyone around them.
As we enter what I hope will be the single best year of your life yet, I’ve come up with 35 Tips that I invite you to concentrate on. Share these tips, reflect on then, post them where you can see them – and allow them to infuse your mindset:
  1. Remember that the quality of your life is determined by the quality of your thoughts.
  2. Keep the promises you make to others – and to yourself.
  3. The project that most scares you is the project you need to do first.
  4. Small daily improvements are the key to staggering long-term results.
  5. Stop being busy being busy. This New Year, clean out the distractions from your work+life and devote to a monomaniacal focus on the few things that matter.
  6. Read “The War of Art”.
  7. Watch “The Fighter”.
  8. In a world where technology is causing some of us to forget how to act human, become the politest person you know.
  9. Remember that all great ideas were first ridiculed.
  10. Remember that critics are dreamers gone scared.
  11. Be “Apple-Like” in your obsession with getting the details right.
  12. Take 60 minutes every weekend to craft a blueprint for the coming seven days. As Saul Bellow once said: “A plan relieves you of the torment of choice.”
  13. Release your need to be liked this New Year. You can’t be a visionary if you long to be liked.
  14. Disrupt or be disrupted.
  15. Hire a personal trainer to get you into the best shape of your life. Superstars focus on the value they receive versus the cost of the service.
  16. Give your teammates, customers and family one of the greatest gifts of all: the gift of your attention (and presence).
  17. Every morning ask yourself: “How may I best serve the most people?”
  18. Every night ask yourself: “What 5 good things happened to me this day?”
  19. Don’t waste your most valuable hours (the morning) doing low value work.
  20. Leave every project you touch at work better than you found it.
  21. Your job is not just to work. Your job is to leave a trail of leaders behind you.
  22. A job is not “just a job”. Every job is a gorgeous vehicle to express your gifts and talents – and to model exceptionalism for all around you.
  23. Fears unfaced become your limits.
  24. Get up at 5 am and take 60 minutes to prepare your mind, body, emotions and spirit to be remarkable during the hours that follow. Being a superstar is not the domain of the gifted but the prepared.
  25. Write love letters to your family.
  26. Smile at strangers.
  27. Drink more water.
  28. Keep a journal. Your life’s story is worth recording.
  29. Do more than you’re paid to do and do work that leaves your teammates breathless.
  30. Leave your ego at the door every morning.
  31. Set 5 daily goals every morning. These small wins will lead to nearly 2000 little victories by the end of the year.
  32. Say “please” and “thank you”.
  33. Remember the secret to happiness is doing work that matters and being an instrument of service.
  34. Don’t be the richest person in the graveyard. Health is wealth.
  35. Life’s short. The greatest risk is risk-less living. And settling for average.
I genuinely wish you the best year of your life.
Stay Great.

10 Tips to Make Your Blended Family Work For You

Blended Family Week: 10 Tips to Make Your Blended Family Work For You

BY:  - 18 Sep '14 | Blended Families

***As originally posted on www.blackandmarriedwithkids.com***

Remember the Brady Bunch?  When the show came on it played that much too familiar song that went something like… “Here’s a story of a lovely lady… and a man named Brady … and that’s the way they ALL became the Brady Bunch… ” In that perfect square with that perfect house and all six kids coming together in harmony.
Every episode ended in a resolution to whatever problem went on for that day.  No matter what, the Brady’s worked it out didn’t they?
And so my fantasy perception of the blended family began.  Little did I know that REAL blended families come with problems and issues, and other parents, and extended family and non biological kids, etc.  After all, the Brady’s never seemed to worry about finances, custody, child support or bitter ex’s did they?  I never saw Marsha, Jan and Cindy’s real father.  They rarely even spoke of him or Peter, Greg and Bobby’s mother.  Were they dead?  Who knows.  What we know now is that blended families are a lot more complex than we ever imagined.
Almost 2,100 blended families form in the United States every day and 68% of re-marriages involve children from prior marriages according to TheBondedFamily.com
Blended families come with a lot of layers and its not gonna be a “Brady” experience for everyone. One of the main things that I think that should be the focus when families connect themselves together through marriage are the kids.  The children are going to be the only people in the whole situation who have no choice.  They don’t get to choose who their mom or dad marries.  They don’t get to choose the children that come along with that marriage.
When my husband and I chose to blend our families we were hoping it would be a piece of cake, but realized that we had to put in work.  All we were certain of is that we loved each other and that we wanted it to work.  My youngest son adapted pretty quickly to my new marriage and our new life in a different state and was comfortable from the beginning, but my oldest son…not so much.  For him it took awhile.  What we understand now is that younger children do adapt better in these situations.  Here are 3 of the steps that we took for our blended family.
Decide on what the child should call the new parent
I don’t think you should force a kid to call another man/woman by mom/dad.  If everyone is cool with it, then by all means make it happen.  We gave ours a choice.  One son calls my husband dad sometimes.  The other refers to him as dad, but calls him by his nickname that we all use.  Not a big issue for us.
Have a conversation with the child’s other parent
My husband and my sons father get along great.  I believe that is because they had a necessary conversation about discipline, respect and expectations for our son in the beginning.  They were on the same page so there was never any drama.  Allow the other parent to have some say so.  Discuss it and work it out no matter what.
Make your child understand that the new parent has authority
Sometimes as single parents we may tend to be a little more lenient on our kids.  Or maybe you are more strict.  When a new parent comes in some kids may think of them more as a friend/enemy but not as an authority figure.  Younger children adapt easier than older ones but if you let them know upfront the adjustment will be easier.
On the flipside of this blended family puzzle, after 10 years of marriage my husband’s 15 year old son came to live with us and that was another tricky situation, because he was definitely an older child.  When I agreed that he could come, I didn’t know how it would work out, but what I did know is that I love my husband and that I was going to do my best to make him feel comfortable and at home. Here are 7 more suggestions that we chose to do that helped him and could help you to make it through the transition into a blended family.
We never made him call me mom.
I never tried to be his mom.  I took care of him and exacted discipline as if he was my own yes, but never tried to take his mother’s place.  I think that’s a touchy issue for most kids and other parents as stated earlier.  Sometimes he called me mom and sometimes he called me Stacey and I was ok with whatever made him comfortable.
Give them their own space.
We did not make him share a room when he got here.  If you can, give them their own space. It has got to be hard to move from everything you know into a new place with different people.  A private space like their own room will give them a safe place to relax and adjust.
Lay down the rules on day one
When kids come from other households they are really coming from another culture or another way of doing things.  Make sure they understand what is acceptable and unacceptable in your household and do that from the start.
Allow them the time they need to adjust
Simple.  Give them time to adjust.  Don’t expect complete and total assimilation during those 1st few weeks/months.  Rome was not built in a day.  Time is essential.
Be patient
Nothing in life is perfect.  Expecting children to NEVER act out sometimes is delusional.  I don’t mean out of control behavior, but being allowed to express themselves emotionally.  Be patient and choose your battles.  Don’t make a big deal out of everything.
Never bad mouth the other parent
NEVER!  This will only breed resentment and hatred.  Also remember that no matter how you feel about the other parent the child loves that person.  Dont hurt them by allowing your mouth to spill out things that the child really has nothing to do with.
While trying to write this post, my stepson (only referring to him as that for the sake of this article.  He is my son) who is grown now and lives on his own, came over just to talk as he often does and I love that.  It lets me know that through everything that he appreciates and respects me.  I believe that in the end its all good.  My biological sons also love and show respect to my husband.  They also are grown now and all of them are respectable, well rounded young men.  I think we did good.  Either way if it can work out for me, then it can also work out for you.  If you can figure out what is going to work best for you and your family and keep everything in the best interest of your kids, you can’t go wrong.  All blended families differ much like a fingerprints, no two are exactly alike.  Remember that when taking anyone’s advice.  The important thing is to be a team and work together to eventually make the transition into a blended family a smoother one.

4 Signs You're Not Trusting Your Instincts

**As seen on http://www.valorieburton.com/blog/ March 8, 2015**

A few days ago, I felt moved to post this on Facebook:
“You know truth when you see it. Your spirit knows. Stop doubting and over analyzing. Trust your instincts.”
It is a simple truth, but one we often need to be reminded of.  If you’ve ever second guessed yourself only to remember later why you should not second guess yourself, you understand why being reminded of the power of trusting your instincts is so important. I believe our instincts are a divine gift – a sixth sense, the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  It isn’t always explainable, but it is always powerful.

This week, I want to remind you to trust your instincts on that decision you are making, that relationship you’re contemplating, or that conversation it’s time to have.  Pray about it. Listen, not just with your ears, but with your spirit. And muster the courage to act on it.  If you don’t, you’ll likely regret it – just like you have before.

We often don’t trust our instincts because of past mistakes. But if you are truly honest, you might just realize that in those past “mistakes,” your instincts were not wrong. They were ignored. Telling yourself the truth is the first step to getting unstuck.  Often, the truth is that we had a nagging feeling about the relationship, but moved forward anyway. We didn’t really want to take that job, but we didn’t have the patience or boldness to go for what we really wanted.  We didn’t feel at peace about that decision, but let someone talk us into. If you had followed your intuition, the outcome may indeed have been different. Consider these four signs that you’re not trusting your instincts, and this week, make a commitment to pay attention:

1.You have that nagging feeling.
You know the feeling? Don’t do that. Something’s not quite right. The timing is off. Pay attention to those divine nudges in your spirit.  If you don’t feel at peace about something, don’t move forward.

2.You’re busy asking everyone’s opinion.
If the right decision isn’t necessarily the popular decision (especially if you are an approval addict), it can be tempting to seek other opinions. Wise counsel is good. People pleasing is not. Get off the phone, stop asking for opinions, and get quiet. Notice the answer that presents itself when you listen to that still, small voice.

3.The truth makes you uncomfortable.
You can either deal with it now or deal with it later. Sometimes your instincts lead you in a direction that stretches you beyond your comfort zone. And that will always make you UN-comfortable.  That nagging truth might be inconvenient, but the sooner you acknowledge it, the better off you’ll be.

4.You are overly-logical.
Don’t get me wrong. Logic has its place. We must be strategic. But sometimes the pivotal decisions in life are not the most obvious.  They are leaps of faith.  You won’t always be able to figure it all out ahead of time.  Take it one step at a time.

My challenge to you:
Get quiet. Trust your instincts.

Women & Finance: You Have to Have Your Own Money Skills

I was speaking to a woman about money and monitoring expenses when she admitted that she “just let’s her husband handle everything.” When she said everything she meant everything. She had no idea what accounts they had or at which institutions they had them. She of course didn’t have the passwords to any accounts. She didn’t pay the bills and trusted and expected him to alert her if there was anything she really needed to know. I was shocked. Was this really happening in this day and age?
Apparently the number of women who handle the household finances went to 24 percent in 2013 according to Fidelity Investments. Wow only 24 percent. It’s better than it was but is still so low. Women were not as confident about their ability to handle the finances especially not investing and long-term financial planning.  This is especially troublesome since women are still outliving men. Between the 40-50 percent divorce rate and the fact that the life expectancy for women is longer than for men, at some point women will have to be fully in charge of the finances.
Even if you allow your spouse to have full control of the finances at least be well versed in what the household financial situation is. Both spouses should have a vested interest in the financial security of the household. Here are some ways and rules to come together over the finances:

1) The information for any shared household accounts should be known to both parties. Information such as the institution, account number, and account password.  Notice I shared accounts. If you subscribe to the ideology of a separate account for each and a joint account … hey that’s fine. As long as both parties agree and are honest.

2) Design the budget together. This way it’s clear to both parties where the money is going and why. Miscommunication here can lead to differing expectations on spending. If one person is unclear on the actual budget for a specific category then it will be much easier to overspend. Overspending in one category causes you to have to make up for it somehow, usually at the expense of your financial goals.

3) Have monthly finance meetings. Schedule the time on your calendars to sit down and check in on the financial plan and with each other. How well did you stay within the spending plan aka your budget? What needs to be tweaked for next month? How much progress did you make towards your goals? Make sure everyone is on the same page. It doesn’t have to be long, it’s a check in.
Guys, don’t think you’re saving her the trouble or the worry. Include her in the conversation and updates on the money. Women take an interest and do what you need to do to be more confident about financial decisions.

Grow your financial confidence:

1) Read (well continue reading since you’re here) financial blogs and books. There’s a lot of great information out there. Start reading and gathering the knowledge necessary to be an engaged participant in building your financial security.

2) Exercise your growing financial muscle. Go beyond the budgeting and household expenses. Have discussions about the long-term financial planning. Make sure you understand what the plan is for your financial security. Know how you will be able to survive and run your household during retirement. Talk about the retirement goal. Know the nest egg number and how close you are to it. Know the plan of how you will reach that number. Talk about the investment vehicles being used.

3) Attend the meetings or conversations with the financial advisor. Both spouses should be comfortable with this person. If either don’t feel comfortable talking to the financial advisor then it may be time to make a switch. This person is handling your money and investments, you should be comfortable asking any question about your money. No matter how silly you may think the question is! You should be able to ask “hey does money grow on trees?” and get a thought answer that doesn’t make you uncomfortable. You can then say you were just joking.
Both spouses should be involved in the financial security of the household. However, each person should have money management skills of their own.

Reinvent Your Life! 10 Undeniable Ways to Boost Your Confidence & Find Your Authentic Voice!

For many years I shrunk my greatness to make others feel comfortable. During the entire process, I did not realize I was rejecting my true authentic voice and being. See, I tried to conform into who the world said I should be rather than how God created me to be.  During this time of conforming, I lost a sense of self, I compared myself to others, I put way too much attention on my outward appearance, all the while ignoring the inner healing and nurturing I desperately needed.
The crazy thing is, I walked around, thinking I was cute and accomplished, having no clue. I did not know who I really was because over the years I gave away my power and position for other people to manage.

This finally came full circle in 2009 when a guy I was dating, asked me to meet his mother.  I was so excited!  He had the bomb resume from a great career, new luxurious vehicle that he purchased in cash, he was financially stable, and of course, he was good looking; all the essentials, or so I thought.  You could not tell me I did not hit the jackpot with this one!

I started to get ready by picking out my outfit, spending hours fixing my hair, ironing, ensuring I had my Brown Sugar body lotion and my DKNY Delicious Apple perfume, then I put on my MAC makeup and finally I was ready to go.

I pulled up to his house, he greeted me at the door, let me in and introduced me to his mother.  She asked me what fragrance I was wearing because she loved it! Of course, I told her.  At that time, I was operating in my introvert personality, so I was not very talkative.  So we exchanged a few words but not much was discussed that evening.  After spending a few hours with him and his mother, I headed home before it got too late. I left thinking I really made a good impression.

When I talked to him later that week, I discovered that his mom thought I was sweet and beautiful.  When I heard this, I was extremely disappointed that "sweet" was the only thing his mom could find to say about me.  I wanted to be known as smart, having a good head on my shoulder; being “wifey-material”;  having the potential to be a good mother one day; a woman who was passionate about youth; women and family; a child of God; authentic; loving; a multiplier; a leader etc.  I wanted to be much more than a sweet and beautiful southern girl.

At that moment, sitting on my bed after ending the conversation, it suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks! I received a good return on my investment.  I invested all my time preparing my outward appearance, making sure I looked good and in return praise on my outward appearance was what I received.

See, I lacked self-awareness, I felt beautiful on the outside, but I was self-conscious about how my behavior and communication came off to other people.  To make matters worse, I wasn’t even aware of how I had been showing up in the world until this point in my life when I received this feedback that was not at all what I expected.  Needless to say, my relationship with this guy ended shortly thereafter. His last words to me were “take care”.  And indeed I did, after that point, I started to discover my self-worth and I found my authentic voice which resulted in me being more confident in all areas of my life.
Before you can be confident, you have to know your self-worth and love yourself unconditionally; you have to first be aware of who you are. How are you showing up in the world?

The next major milestone is to accept who you are from your behavior, communication, your appearances and your past experiences. See you set the standard for how the world treats you. If you don’t accept who you are, why would anyone else?
Detach your value from how you look, what you say, what you do, your marital status, your followers or what someone else is doing on your job or in their business. You are valued because you are a precious soul who loves, who cares and who was custom made for a specific purpose.  It is not about what you do, it is all about who you are and how much you like yourself!

There are 10 Undeniable Things You Must Do to move forward to reinventing yourself to become the Version of Yourself, boost your confidence, self-worth and find your true authentic voice.

1.)    Know thy Self!
The First thing is to know yourself.  If you want to elevate your self–worth, you have to love yourself. You cannot love yourself if you haven’t taken the time to get to know who you really are.  In a society, where there is so much pressure to fall into certain categories whether that is: body size, hair texture, education or race; you can lose a sense of self.  Take time to write out your core values and beliefs, write out your strengths and weaknesses, and write out your most favorable physical features and your less favorable features.  Then I dare you to make a decision to accept and love your self-unconditionally.  Once you do that, you put other people on notice that they must take you as you are or not at all!

2.)    To Thy Own Self Be True!
Once you identify what your core values and beliefs are, stay true to who you are!  There will be times where you feel the pressure to go against what feels natural to you or what that inner voice is whispering to you against your better judgment.  But don’t you dare!  The moment you do, is the moment you betray yourself the person that loves you the most, YOU; for the approval of someone who may not even be around six months from now.

3.)    Free Yourself From the Opinions of Others!
People are always going to have something to say.  Make a declaration that other people’s opinion of you is really none of your business; it is their business, their problem!  Do right by you! Everyone else will either have to accept it or reject it and you just have to be okay either way.

4.)    Accept Yourself Completely, Flaws and All!
Reflect on the things you don’t like about yourself and make a decision to embrace that as your uniqueness.  I struggled with accepting my nose.  People teased me growing up by saying I looked like Gonzo (from Sesame Street) and that I had a neck like a giraffe.  In addition, I hated my middle name, but I made a choice that I would find something to love about all of these things and you can too!  Let your difference define your uniqueness!

5.)    Let-go of Past Guilt and Shame. You are Forgiven!
Past failures and shortcomings, if not released and freed can keep you in a place of guilt and shame.  Everyone has a past and we all have done something that we are not so proud to admit. What I have learned is some of the most prosperous ministries and businesses where birthed from these same incidents that we hide, deny and keep ourselves.  Think of Sarah Jakes Roberts who shared the one thing she was most ashamed of, having a child at the age of 13 years old and now she shares her mistakes to teach the message of God’s grace.  The first step is to forgive yourself, then confess that you messed up, and make sure that it is not from a place of embarrassment, but from a place of an overcomer.  Perhaps your mess will be your message or maybe it was just a trial to make you a better woman, mother, wife, or friend.  Every experience you have is equipping you for a destined future.

6.)    Time Out on Waiting for Someone Else to Validate You, Validate Yourself!
You are perfectly you!  You are smart enough, you are beautiful enough, you have the ability to communicate, you have the ability to speak and do everything that is required for you to accomplish the mission you have been called to complete.  No one is going to crown you as queen and say, yes you are worthy to wear your crown.  You don’t have to wait for someone to give you the crown and throne.  It is your birthright!  So claim it!

7.)    Learn to Give Yourself a Break!
Oftentimes we can be our own biggest critics.  Listen, you are going to make mistakes and fall short.  Some level of failed attempts are a pre-requisite for success.  Understand that it is just what is required to get you from your dream to your destiny.  So give yourself a break.  If you mess up, get back up and try again.  You just learned another way that doesn’t work! Don’t be so hard on yourself.  Sometimes just say to yourself that is okay, I will get it the next time! Pick-up and go back even harder giving 110% of yourself to your dream.

8.)     Stop Focusing on Perfection and Shift to Planning and Preparation!
You may be a perfectionist and I get it.  There is nothing wrong with wanting things to be neat and in order.  The challenge is taking the time in advance to properly plan out what is required in terms of resources time, money and energy to get something accomplished.  Although you may be the responsible person, you don’t need to do everything yourself.  Get some help even if it is hiring a virtual assistance, housekeeper, a life or business coach.  Use preparation to boost your readiness and your confidence!

9.)    Take Care of You First! Mind, Body, Spirit!
It is just like being on a plane and the flight attendants tells you to make sure you secure your own oxygen mask before trying to assist others; be it little children or an elderly adult.  The pilot as well as the attendants, understand that if you don’t put on your oxygen mask first, you may die and then a helpless child won’t be able to figure out how to put on their oxygen mask. Make sure you are receiving sufficient oxygen (food, water, exercise, rest etc.) so that you can make sure that others (your kids, your husband, co-workers, your elderly parents) will get what they need. Talk through life issues, invest in yourself by getting the necessary books or programs so you can live smarter and not harder. Stay connected to your Creator by praying, worshipping, and reading daily.

10.) Trust Yourself, Your Heart Knows the Answer!
Sometimes you will have to turn down the outside noise, so you can hear your own voice.  No one knows you better than you! Avoid the temptation of always seeking the opinion of others for personal decisions. There is a place to seek wise counsel when facing major life decisions like buying a house, who you will marry or making a business decision.  But most times, you just need to follow your gut instinct and trust your heart knows the answer.

I challenge you to first get to know yourself and then make 21 declarations about how fabulous you are and read these declarations every day for the next 21 days.  You will walk away more confident, more whole, more attractive, more loveable, more balanced, more poise and more powerful in your relationship and in the space you occupy.
